Forge scale, also known as mill scale, is a flaky surface that forms on the surface of hot iron and steel when they are heated in the presence of oxygen. This byproduct of the forging process consists mainly of iron oxides, with a composition typically including magnetite (Fe3O4) and wustite (FeO).
Magnetite is a black-colored mineral that is formed from the oxidation of iron during high-temperature processes. It has magnetic properties and contributes to the overall weight of forge scale.
