Forging is a traditional and essential technique in blacksmithing that involves shaping metal through the application of force and heat. Over the years, various forging techniques have been developed to create different shapes, designs, and textures in metalwork. 1. **Drawing Out:** Drawing out is a basic forging technique used to elongate a piece of metal by reducing its cross-sectional area while increasing its length. To draw out metal, heat the workpiece evenly in the forge until it reaches an orange or yellow color (depending on the type of metal). Use a hammer to strike the heated metal along its length, moving from one end to another. Rotate the workpiece regularly to ensure even stretching. This technique is commonly used for making tapers, points, and decorative elements like scrolls.
2. **Upsetting:** Upsetting is essentially the opposite of drawing out; it involves thickening or widening a section of metal by applying force at right angles to its length. To upset a piece of metal, heat the desired section in the forge until it reaches a bright orange color. Place the hot end on an anvil or swage block and strike it with a hammer perpendicular to its length. Repeat this process as needed until you achieve your desired thickness or width increase. Upsetting is often used for creating tenons, shoulders, and forming heads on bolts or rivets.
3. **Bending:** Bending is one of the most common forging techniques used by blacksmiths to shape metal into curves or angles without cutting or welding it together.
