Cast Iron Anvils: Cast iron anvils are popular among beginners and hobbyists due to their affordability. They provide a good working surface but lack the durability of other materials. Cast iron is also prone to cracking under heavy use or excessive force.

Steel Anvils: Steel anvils are known for their strength, durability, and superior rebound characteristics compared to other materials. They offer excellent support while hammering hot metal but may transmit more vibrations compared to wrought iron alternatives.

Weight:
The weight of an anvil affects its stability during work and determines how much energy it absorbs from each hammer blow. Typically measured in pounds or kilograms, lighter anvils suit smaller projects or mobile setups where portability is crucial.

For general blacksmithing purposes, a 100-200-pound (45-90 kg) anvil is recommended as it provides adequate stability without being too cumbersome to move around if needed. Double Horn Anvil: As the name suggests, double horn anvils have two horns on opposite ends. These horns provide different curvatures to facilitate bending or shaping metal from multiple angles. They are particularly useful when creating intricate curves or scrolls.

Square-Faced Anvil: Square-faced anvils have a large flat surface without any tapering or horns. They are popular among blacksmiths who primarily perform straightening, planishing, or punching operations that require ample space for maneuverability.

Hardness:
The hardness of an anvil’s face significantly affects its performance during forging operations. A softer face will deform over time under heavy use, while a harder face may cause chipping or cracking when struck repeatedly.

Ideally, the face of an anvil should be hardened but not excessively brittle. Most high-quality modern anvils feature heat-treated steel faces that strike this balance effectively. However, it’s worth noting that some older cast iron anvils might have softer faces due to their manufacturing process.

Rebound:
Rebound refers to how much energy is transferred back into your workpiece after striking it on the anvil’s surface. Higher rebound means less energy loss during each hammer blow and more efficient forging.

Steel faced anvils generally offer better rebound compared to cast iron ones due to their superior material properties. When choosing an anvil based on rebound characteristics, consider your specific forging techniques as certain projects may require higher rebound rates for optimal results.

Additional Features:
While the aforementioned factors are essential, there are a few additional features that can enhance your blacksmithing experience. Some anvils come with integrated hardy holes or pritchel holes, which allow you to secure and shape your workpiece using specialized tools. Anvils with built-in horns or upsetting blocks provide added versatility for various bending and shaping tasks.

In conclusion, selecting the right anvil is crucial for any blacksmith. Consider factors such as material composition, weight, shape and design, hardness, rebound characteristics, and additional features when making your decision.
