1. Anthracite Coal:

Its main advantage lies in its efficiency as a fuel source; it burns hot and produces very little smoke or soot. This makes it ideal for achieving high temperatures needed for forging metals quickly. Additionally, anthracite tends to have a longer burn time compared to other coals.

However, there are some drawbacks to using anthracite coal as well. It can be more expensive than other types of coal due to its superior quality. Furthermore, it can be challenging to ignite without the use of additional accelerants like lighter fluid or kindling.

2. Bituminous Coal:
Bituminous coal is another commonly used type in blacksmithing because it strikes a balance between price and performance. It contains lower carbon content (typically around 60-80%) but has higher levels of volatile matter that aids combustion.

One significant advantage of bituminous coal is its availability – it can be found in various regions worldwide at affordable prices. Moreover, bituminous coals tend to produce long-lasting fires with good heat output while still providing sufficient control over temperature during forging processes.

Nevertheless, bituminous coals may create more smoke compared to anthracite when burned due to their higher volatile matter content.

3. Sub-bituminous Coal:
Sub-bituminous coals have lower carbon contents (around 45-60%) but higher moisture levels compared to anthracite and bituminous coals. They are generally less expensive, making them an attractive option for blacksmiths on a budget.

Although sub-bituminous coal can provide sufficient heat for forging, it tends to produce more smoke and soot. Additionally, the higher moisture content may result in slower ignition times and less efficient burning compared to other coal types.

4. Lignite Coal:
Lignite is the lowest quality coal available for blacksmithing purposes. With carbon content ranging from 25-35%, it has lower energy output than other coals. Its high moisture content also makes it challenging to ignite and sustain a fire.

Due to its low energy output, lignite is not recommended for heavy-duty forging tasks that require high temperatures or extended periods of heat application.

In conclusion, choosing the right type of coal depends on various factors such as desired temperature range, availability, cost considerations, and personal preferences regarding smoke production. Anthracite offers superior performance but at a higher price point, while bituminous coal strikes a balance between price and functionality. Sub-bituminous coals are budget-friendly options but may produce more smoke and burn less efficiently. Lastly, lignite should be avoided unless only small-scale or low-temperature work is required.
