1. Wood Selection:
The quality of charcoal heavily depends on the type of wood used. Hardwoods such as oak, beech, or hickory are preferred due to their higher density and energy content. Softwoods like pine or fir can also be used but tend to produce lower-quality charcoal with a shorter burn time.

2. Wood Preparation:
Once suitable hardwood is selected, it needs to be cut into small pieces or split into logs of manageable size. The smaller the pieces, the more efficient the carbonization process will be.

3. Carbonization Process:
Carbonization is essentially burning wood in a low-oxygen environment to remove moisture and volatile compounds while preserving its carbon content.

a) Charcoal Pile Construction:
Build a conical pile using alternating layers of wood and kindling material such as twigs or straw around an open center space called “the chimney.” This structure allows air circulation during combustion while limiting oxygen supply inside the pile.

b) Ignition and Choking:
Light up the kindling material at the base of your pile through the chimney opening. As flames develop, cover them with loosely stacked wood pieces until all exposed surfaces have ignited evenly. Once fully lit, seal off most airflow by covering the top layer with soil or sand except for a small opening at one side called “the vent.”

c) Controlled Combustion:
During carbonization, monitor temperature closely by adjusting ventilation through periodic adjustment of “the vent” opening’s size and location on your pile’s side wall – reducing airflow will slow down combustion, while increasing it will raise the temperature. Aim for a target temperature of around 700-900 degrees Celsius (1292-1652 degrees Fahrenheit) within the charcoal pile.

4. Cooling and Storage:
After several days or weeks, depending on pile size and wood type, when carbonization is complete, extinguish any remaining embers by covering the pile completely with soil or sand. Allow it to cool down naturally over a few days before removing the newly formed charcoal carefully. Store your charcoal in dry conditions to prevent moisture absorption.
