Slag refers to the impurities present in raw iron ore or pig iron, such as silica, limestone, and other non-metallic substances. On the other hand, an iron bloom is a mass of porous metallic sponge-like material containing mostly pure iron with some remaining traces of slag.

The first step in separating the iron bloom from slag involves building a properly constructed bloomery furnace. Traditionally made using clay or stone bricks lined with heat-resistant materials like fireclay or refractory bricks, these furnaces provide an environment conducive for smelting and separation processes.

Once the furnace is ready and fired up with fuel such as charcoal or coke (a processed form of coal), it’s time to charge it with raw materials. A typical charge consists of alternating layers of crushed charcoal (or coke) along with layers of preheated ore mixed with fluxes like limestone or dolomite – substances that aid in removing impurities during smelting.

As the temperature inside the furnace rises due to combustion reactions taking place within it, various chemical changes occur within the charged materials. The carbon monoxide produced by burning fuel reduces any oxidized compounds present in ore into metallic form while drawing out impurities as volatile gases through a process called reduction.

During this reduction phase occurring at temperatures ranging between 1,200°C (2,192°F) and 1,300°C (2,372°F), the iron melts and combines with carbon to form a semi-liquid mass known as a bloom. This bloom absorbs slag and other impurities present in the ore.

Next comes the crucial step of separating the iron bloom from slag. One method employed by blacksmiths is called “breaking” or “shingling.” In this process, the partially fused bloom is removed from the furnace using specialized tools like tongs or rakes and transferred to an anvil-like surface known as a “bloomery hearth.”

The hot bloom is then hammered repeatedly with a heavy hammer or sledgehammer, causing it to fracture into smaller pieces. These fragments are carefully examined for traces of remaining slag. If any slag is found, it can be chipped away manually using hammers or chisels.

Another technique used for separating the iron bloom from slag involves reheating it in another forge known as a “finery forge.” The finery forge operates at higher temperatures than the initial smelting furnace and utilizes forced air through bellows to achieve even higher heat levels.

While inside the finery forge, additional refining processes take place that further separate iron from remaining impurities. By subjecting the hot bloom to repeated heating and mechanical agitation through forging operations like rolling or hammering, more slag can be expelled out until only pure iron remains.

Once separated from most of its impurities, either through breaking/shingling or refining in a finery forge, the resulting iron blooms are ready for further processing by blacksmiths. They can be reheated and forged into desired shapes or combined with other blooms to create larger masses suitable for different applications such as making tools, weapons, or decorative objects.
