Types of Burners for Gas Forges

Gas forges are an essential tool for blacksmiths, allowing them to heat and shape metal with precision and control. The heart of any gas forge is its burner, which provides the necessary heat to reach forging temperatures. There are several types of burners available, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. In this article, we will explore the most common types of burners used in gas forges.

1. Venturi Burner:
The venturi burner is one of the oldest and simplest designs used in gas forges. It operates on the principle of creating a low-pressure area by forcing air through a narrow throat or nozzle, which draws fuel (usually propane) into the mix as it passes through a venturi tube. This creates a mixture that can be ignited at the burner head.

One advantage of venturi burners is their simplicity and reliability; they have few moving parts and require minimal maintenance. They also provide good heat output and can reach high temperatures suitable for forging steel. However, they may struggle to achieve efficient combustion at lower temperatures due to incomplete mixing of fuel and air.

2. Forced Air Burner:
As the name suggests, forced air burners utilize a fan or blower to deliver a controlled amount of air into the combustion chamber along with fuel (typically propane or natural gas). This constant supply of oxygen ensures complete combustion at all temperature ranges.

Forced air burners offer excellent versatility as they can produce both high-temperature flames ideal for forging steel as well as lower temperature flames suitable for non-ferrous metals such as copper or aluminum. They also provide better efficiency compared to venturi burners since they ensure proper mixing and combustion regardless of operating conditions.

3. Ribbon Burner:
Ribbon burners consist of multiple small nozzles arranged side by side within a long rectangular housing or “ribbon.” Fuel (propane or natural gas) and air are delivered separately to each nozzle, creating a series of individual flames that combine into a continuous ribbon-like flame.

The unique design of ribbon burners allows for even heat distribution across the entire forge chamber, making them ideal for larger or irregularly shaped workpieces. They also offer precise control over temperature gradients and can maintain consistent temperatures throughout the forging process. However, ribbon burners can be more challenging to build and require careful tuning to ensure proper fuel-to-air ratios in each nozzle.

4. Atmospheric Burner:
Atmospheric burners are typically used in large industrial gas forges or kilns where precise temperature control is not critical. Unlike forced air or venturi burners, atmospheric burners rely on natural draft airflow rather than mechanical assistance.

These simple yet effective burners operate by allowing fuel (propane or natural gas) to mix with surrounding air as it enters the combustion chamber through an open port. The resulting mixture is then ignited at the burner head. While atmospheric burners lack the efficiency and temperature control of other designs, they are relatively low-cost and easy to construct.

5. Multiport Burner:
Multiport burners consist of several small nozzles arranged concentrically within a central tube or ring burner assembly. Each nozzle delivers a controlled amount of fuel (propane or natural gas) along with pre-mixed air into the combustion chamber.

Multiport burners provide excellent heat output while maintaining uniform heating across the forge chamber due to their evenly distributed flame pattern. They also allow for greater flexibility in adjusting flame characteristics by controlling individual nozzle settings.
