Once heated, the metal is placed on an anvil where it is hammered into shape using different types of hammers and other specialized tools.

2. Hammering Techniques

Hammering is one of the fundamental skills every blacksmith must master. There are several hammering techniques that have been utilized by blacksmiths over time:

a) Drawing Out: This technique involves elongating a piece of metal by repeatedly striking it along its length while rotating it on the anvil.

b) Upsetting: Upsetting is essentially the opposite of drawing out. It involves thickening or shortening a piece of metal by striking or squeezing it from one end.

c) Bending: Bending involves placing a heated piece of metal over or around another object (such as mandrels or anvils) and striking or bending it into shape using hammers.

d) Fullering: Fullering refers to creating grooves or hollowed-out sections in forged pieces using special fuller tools like swages or fullers.

3. Joinery Techniques

Joinery techniques are crucial for connecting different pieces of metal together to create complex structures. Some common joinery techniques used by historical blacksmiths include:

a) Riveting: This technique involves heating and hammering a metal pin (called a rivet) through two or more pieces of metal, creating a permanent connection.

b) Forge Welding: Forge welding is the process of joining two separate pieces of metal by heating them until they reach their melting point and then hammering them together.

c) Collaring: Collaring involves wrapping one piece of metal around another piece and then hammering it into place, creating a strong mechanical bond.

4. Hardening and Tempering

Historically, blacksmiths didn’t just shape metal; they also had to ensure that it possessed the desired strength and durability. To achieve this, they employed hardening and tempering techniques:

a) Hardening: Hardening is the process of increasing the hardness of steel by heating it to its critical temperature and then rapidly cooling it in oil or water. This creates a hardened outer layer on the steel while maintaining some flexibility in the core.

b) Tempering: After hardening, tempered steel is heated again at lower temperatures to reduce brittleness caused by excessive hardness. The process allows for controlled softening without compromising strength.

5. Anvils

An anvil is perhaps one of the most iconic tools associated with blacksmithing. Traditional anvils were made from wrought iron or cast iron with hardened steel faces called “anvil faces.” They provided a solid surface against which hot metals could be hammered.

Anvils typically consist of several parts, including:

– Face: The top portion where most forging takes place.
– Horn: A curved extension used for bending or shaping metals.
– Pritchel Hole: A small round hole used for punching holes in workpieces.
– Hardy Hole: A square hole used for holding specialized tools like hardy tools and cutting tools.

6. Tongs

Tongs are essential for safely gripping and manipulating hot metal during the forging process. They come in various shapes and sizes to accommodate different types of workpieces.

Historically, tongs were made from wrought iron or steel. Their designs evolved over time to include long reins (handles) with jaws that could grip the metal firmly without slipping.

7. Hammers

Hammers are indispensable tools in blacksmithing, used for shaping and striking metal on the anvil. Various types of hammers were employed by historical blacksmiths:

– Cross Peen Hammer: A hammer with a flat face on one side and a wedge-shaped peen on the other, used for drawing out metal.
– Ball Pein Hammer: Similar to cross peen hammers but with a rounded peening end instead of a wedge shape.
– Sledgehammer: A large, heavy hammer used for heavy-duty work like striking punches or driving drifts.
– Rounding Hammer: A specialized hammer designed with rounded faces for creating smooth curves and rounding edges.
