c) Bending: As the name suggests, bending is all about manipulating metal into curved shapes using heat and strategic hammer blows against different parts of the anvil’s surface.

3. Surface Finishing:

b) Polishing: Polishing adds shine and luster to a blacksmith’s creations. Using progressively finer grit sandpaper or polishing compounds, they buff the metal until it gleams, achieving a mirror-like finish if desired.

c) Patination: Patination refers to intentionally applying chemicals or heat to create colorful oxidation on the surface of metals like copper or bronze. This technique not only serves decorative purposes but can also provide protection against corrosion.

4. Heat Treatment:
Heat treatment is crucial for strengthening metal objects by altering their internal structure:

a) Annealing: Annealing involves heating the metal above its critical temperature before slowly cooling it down, usually in a controlled environment like vermiculite or lime powder. This process reduces brittleness and makes the metal more workable during subsequent stages of fabrication.

b) Quenching: Quenching rapidly cools heated steel by immersing it in water, oil, or other quenchants depending on the desired result. This technique hardens steel while maintaining its strength properties.

c) Tempering: After quenching, tempering is performed by reheating the hardened steel at a lower temperature for a specific period before allowing it to cool. This process reduces internal stresses and brittleness, resulting in a more durable and resilient material.
