The clay acts as an insulator, resulting in varying cooling rates across the blade during quenching. This creates a harder edge (martensite) while leaving the spine softer (ferrite/pearlite). Another crucial technique is forge folding or pattern welding. By repeatedly folding layers of steel upon themselves, we create distinctive patterns that not only add aesthetic appeal but also improve overall strength by dispersing any potential flaws throughout multiple layers.
