After shaping and joining metals, quenching is often performed to cool down hot steel rapidly, making it harder but also more brittle. To reduce brittleness while retaining hardness, tempering follows by carefully reheating the hardened steel to specific temperatures according to its intended use.

The final step in forging involves applying finishing touches to enhance both aesthetics and functionality. This includes grinding rough edges, polishing surfaces, adding decorative elements through engraving or chasing techniques, and even applying protective coatings such as oil or wax for preservation purposes.
