To begin with, set up your coal in the center of the firepot in your forge. Place smaller pieces at the bottom and larger ones on top. Make sure there is enough space between each piece for airflow. The goal here is to create a stable base that allows air circulation for efficient combustion.

Next, stack some kindling material around and on top of the coal pile. This can be crumpled newspaper or small sticks arranged in a teepee shape above the coals. The kindling serves as an ignition source that helps start initial flames easily.

Now comes lighting time! Use matches or a lighter to ignite the kindling material from several different points simultaneously. Ensure that all sides catch fire evenly so that combustion spreads throughout all areas of your fuel bed uniformly.

Once flames develop steadily across your kindling material, use your fire poker to gently push it down into contact with the coal bed beneath it while being cautious not to smother any emerging flames. This step helps transfer heat from burning kindling onto unlit portions of coals below which encourages further combustion.

As soon as most parts of your fuel bed are alight with visible flames dancing across them accompanied by some smoke (which will eventually clear), it is time to add more coal. Gradually introduce additional pieces of coal, starting with smaller sizes and gradually moving towards larger ones. This allows for a controlled increase in heat without smothering the fire.

Remember to maintain proper airflow throughout the process by adjusting your forge’s air intake and chimney damper settings accordingly. Too much air can cause the fire to burn too hot, while too little can lead to incomplete combustion and a weak fire.

As you continue working at your forge, periodically check on the fuel bed and adjust as needed. Add more coal when necessary, ensuring that there are always burning coals present in your forge for consistent heat production.
