1. Drawing out:

Position the heated section over the edge of the anvil and strike it with controlled hammer blows along its length while rotating it slightly after each strike. This process gradually thins and extends the metal.

2. Upsetting:

Contrary to drawing out, upsetting is used when you need to create thicker sections or increase material density in specific areas of your workpiece. Begin by heating only the intended area instead of heating the whole piece uniformly like in drawing out. Transfer it onto your anvil and use precise hammer strikes perpendicular to its length while turning it occasionally for even distribution of force. This compresses the metal and creates a thicker section where needed.

3. Bending:

Bending allows you to shape metal into curves or angles according to your design requirements. Heating up your workpiece evenly before bending ensures better malleability during shaping without causing cracks or breakages due to uneven stress distribution within the material structure.

To bend accurately, hold one end firmly with tongs against one side of the anvil’s horn or other curved surfaces, then use your hammer to strike the other end gradually. Move along the length of the piece while repeating this process until you achieve the desired shape.

4. Twisting:

Twisting adds a beautiful and unique aesthetic to your metalwork. To perform this technique, heat a section of your workpiece evenly until it becomes malleable but not too hot that it loses its structural integrity. Secure one end in a vice or with tongs on an anvil and use another pair of tongs to grip the other end firmly.

With steady pressure, start twisting the metal by rotating one hand clockwise and the other counterclockwise simultaneously. Maintain control over each twist to ensure evenness throughout. The result is an elegant spiral pattern that adds visual interest to your final product.

5. Punching and Drifting:

Punching and drifting are essential techniques used for creating holes in metalwork, whether it be for rivets or decorative elements like handles or hooks. Begin by marking the desired hole location on your heated workpiece using a center punch.

Next, position your workpiece over a hardy hole or bolster plate on top of your anvil if available; otherwise, use a specialized tool called a bottom swage that fits into your hardy hole instead.

Hold a hot punch (a long rod with one pointed end) against the marked spot and strike it with controlled force using another hammer repeatedly until you create a small indentation known as “pilot hole.” Once established, continue punching through gradually by increasing both striking force and accuracy.

To enlarge the hole further, switch from using a punch to employing specially designed drifts—long tapered tools—to widen and shape holes precisely according to requirements while maintaining structural integrity.

6. Welding:

Welding is an advanced forging technique used when joining two separate pieces of metal together permanently. Although there are various welding methods available today (such as gas, arc, or laser welding), forge welding is the traditional method used in blacksmithing.

To perform forge welding, start by preparing both pieces of metal to be joined. This involves cleaning them thoroughly and applying flux—a chemical compound that helps remove impurities during heating—to prevent oxidation. Heat the workpieces until they reach a critical temperature where they are malleable enough to bond together.

Once at the correct temperature, bring the two pieces together using tongs and strike them firmly with a hammer to create a solid weld joint. Repeat this process as necessary while reheating if the metals cool down too much before achieving proper fusion.

Mastering these essential forging techniques will provide you with a strong foundation for your blacksmithing journey.
