Using a chisel or punch tool specifically designed for this purpose (often called “slitters” or “swages”), carefully drive it through the center of your tapered piece while rotating it slightly back and forth to maintain symmetry.

Once you have successfully punched through, you can now begin shaping the hollow form. Using the rounded end of your hammer or specially designed tools like swage blocks, start to curve and shape the metal around the opening. This process requires patience and precision as you work to achieve your desired design.

To add depth and dimension to your hollow form, consider using various techniques such as dishing or planishing. Dishing involves creating concave shapes by hammering from the inside of the form, while planishing smooths out any irregularities on the surface by repeatedly striking it with a flat-faced hammer.

Throughout this entire process, remember to regularly heat your metal in the induction forge to maintain its malleability. If at any point it becomes too cool and difficult to work with, simply reheat it until it reaches an optimal temperature again.

Once you are satisfied with the overall shape and design of your hollow form, take some time to refine its details. This could include adding decorative elements such as twists or curls or even incorporating other materials like wood or glass for a mixed-media effect.

Finally, when your hollow form is complete and has cooled down sufficiently after heating in the induction forge, give it a thorough clean up using sandpaper or wire brushes. You can also choose to apply finishes like paint, lacquer, or patina depending on your artistic vision.
