Joinery Methods for Connecting Pieces of Wrought Iron

Apply sufficient force using a hammer or power hammer to create a solid weld.

2. Riveting:
Riveting is another commonly used method for joining wrought iron pieces that cannot be welded due to their shape or design intricacy. It involves drilling holes through both sections you want to connect and inserting rivets into these holes.

To achieve a secure connection, start by aligning the two pieces precisely where you want them joined and marking corresponding hole locations on each piece. Using appropriate-sized drill bits, make holes that match the diameter of your chosen rivets.

Next, insert rivets from one side and use a peening tool (such as a ball-peen hammer) to flatten out their opposite ends on the other side until they form heads large enough to hold everything firmly in place.

3. Mortise and Tenon Joint:
The mortise and tenon joint is widely utilized in woodworking but also finds its place within blacksmithing when connecting wrought iron pieces. This method involves creating a hole (mortise) in one piece and a protruding tongue-shaped section (tenon) on the other to fit into this hole.

To create a mortise and tenon joint, mark out the desired location for the connection. Using appropriate tools like chisels or punches, carefully remove material from one piece to create the mortise. Ensure that the dimensions of both the mortise and tenon are precise to achieve a tight fit.

Once you have prepared both parts, insert the tenon into the mortise and secure it with rivets or welding. This joinery method provides excellent strength while allowing some flexibility if needed.

4. Collar Joint:
The collar joint is an elegant way of joining two wrought iron pieces together without using heat or rivets. It involves wrapping an overlapping collar around two sections, securing them tightly through mechanical means such as screws or bolts.

The scarf joint is commonly used when connecting elongated sections in wrought ironwork such as railings or gates. It involves tapering down one end of each piece at specific angles so that when joined together, they form an extended surface area for increased strength.

To create a scarf joint, start by marking out identical angles on both ends of each piece you wish to connect. Using a grinder or file, carefully shape the ends to match these angles, ensuring they fit together seamlessly.

Once you have prepared both ends, align them and secure the connection with welding or rivets. The greater surface area provided by the scarf joint enhances strength and stability in long wrought iron structures subjected to tension or bending forces.
