To start with riveting, you’ll need a few basic tools such as a hammer, an anvil or hard surface, drill bits suitable for your material thickness, and of course, the rivets themselves. First off, mark the positions where the holes will be drilled on each piece. Using appropriate-sized drill bits for your chosen rivets (typically slightly smaller than the diameter), carefully create matching holes on both parts.

Once you have aligned the holes perfectly, insert the rivet from one side until it protrudes slightly from the other side. Place your workpiece on top of an anvil or another solid surface with a hole underneath where the end of the protruding rivet can rest upon impact without deformation.

Using a hammer specifically designed for this purpose—one with different face shapes like flat and peen—start striking lightly at first to ensure proper alignment before increasing force gradually until both sides are tightly connected. Continue hammering until excess material is flattened against each side while maintaining control over pressure so as not to damage surrounding areas.

2. Cold Connections: Screws and Bolts
While traditional methods like riveting have their charm and historical significance in blacksmithing, modern techniques have also been embraced by craftsmen. Cold connections, such as screws and bolts, offer convenience and versatility in joining metal parts together.

Screws are commonly used for lighter applications or when disassembly may be required. They consist of a threaded shank and a head that can be tightened using a screwdriver or power tool. When choosing screws for your project, consider the length, thread type (self-tapping or machine), and head style (flathead, roundhead, etc.) based on the desired aesthetic and function.

Bolts are similar to screws but typically feature a larger diameter and require nuts to secure them properly. Bolting is often preferred when dealing with heavy-duty structures that demand extra strength and stability. To join two metal pieces using bolts, simply drill holes through both parts at corresponding locations before inserting the bolt from one side and tightening it with the nut on the other side.

3. Welding: The Ultimate Fusion
When it comes to joining metal permanently with incredible strength, welding steals the spotlight in blacksmithing. This process involves melting metal pieces together using high heat generated from various sources like oxy-acetylene torches or electric arc welders.

Welding requires skillful technique as well as protective gear such as gloves, goggles, and welding aprons due to its inherent risks associated with intense heat exposure and sparks flying during fusion. Before starting any welding project, ensure you have adequate training in safety procedures to prevent accidents or injury.

There are several types of welding techniques commonly used by blacksmiths:

a) Stick Welding (Shielded Metal Arc Welding): This method uses an electrode coated in flux that melts during the welding process while shielding both molten metal puddle and weld zone from atmospheric contamination.
b) MIG Welding (Metal Inert Gas): MIG welders use a continuous wire electrode along with an inert gas shield to protect the weld from contamination.
c) TIG Welding (Tungsten Inert Gas): Known for its precision, TIG welding utilizes a tungsten electrode to create an arc that melts the metal while a separate filler rod is added as necessary.

Each welding technique has its advantages and disadvantages. The choice depends on factors such as project requirements, available equipment, skill level, and personal preference.

4. Adhesive Bonding: A Modern Approach
In addition to traditional techniques like riveting and modern methods such as welding, adhesive bonding has gained popularity among blacksmiths in recent years. While not commonly associated with metalworking initially, adhesives designed specifically for metals have proven their worth in joining various materials together.

Adhesive bonding provides benefits like uniform distribution of stress across the joint, sealing against corrosion or weather exposure, and even vibration dampening when used appropriately. However, it’s important to note that adhesive bonding might not be suitable for every application or load-bearing structures due to potential limitations in strength compared to mechanical connections like rivets or bolts.

When using adhesives for metal joining purposes:

a) Clean all surfaces thoroughly by removing any dirt, rust, or oil using solvents appropriate for your chosen adhesive.
b) Apply the adhesive evenly on both surfaces being joined.
c) Press both pieces together firmly and ensure proper alignment.
d) Allow sufficient curing time as specified by the manufacturer before subjecting the joint to stress or load.

Always choose adhesives specifically formulated for metal-to-metal applications and follow instructions carefully for optimal results.
