Forge Your Own Tools: How to Make Chisels and Punches for Blacksmithing

Chisels and punches are essential tools for any blacksmith, as they are used to cut and shape metal. While there are plenty of chisels and punches available on the market, making your own can be a rewarding experience that allows you to customize the tool to fit your needs.

To begin making a chisel or punch, you’ll need some basic equipment: a forge or torch for heating the metal, an anvil for shaping it, hammer(s) for striking it into shape, and steel stock in the desired size.

One important consideration when selecting steel stock is its carbon content. Higher-carbon steels generally make better chisels and punches because they hold an edge well. Look for high carbon steels like 1095 or W1/W2 if possible.

The first step in making a chisel or punch is to determine what type of tool you need based on the project you’re working on. For example, if you need to make a cold chisel (used for cutting cold metal), start with flat bar stock around 3/8″ thick by 1-1/4″ wide.

Using your forge or torch, heat up the bar until it’s red hot. Then use tongs to transfer it onto your anvil where you will begin shaping it using hammers of different sizes. Start by hammering one end of the bar into a point which will form one end of your chisel blade.

Once that part is done move onto forming other parts of your blade such as shoulders which prevent over-penetration during usage.

Next comes “hardening,” which involves heating up the blade until it’s glowing red-hot before quenching in oil or water – this process makes sure that once cooled down rapidly from high temperature ,the steel becomes very hard but also brittle so we’ll have to temper them later on

After hardening comes tempering where we reheat our newly hardened blade to a lower temperature and hold it for a set amount of time depending on the steel used. This process will make the chisel softer and more flexible while also making sure it retains its hardness.

Once your chisel or punch is tempered, it’s time to sharpen and polish the edge using a grinder or file. Make sure you create an angle that complements the type of work you’ll be doing with your new tool.

Finally, attach handles to your chisels or punches. Handles can be made from wood, plastic, or metal – whatever feels most comfortable in your hand.

To attach them use either rivets, screws or just epoxy glue like JB Weld once they are fitted tightly into their respective holes drilled into our chisel/punch body.
