Interview with Hugh Jackman: From Wolverine to Blacksmithing

Hugh Jackman is a man of many talents. Known for his iconic portrayal of Wolverine in the X-Men franchise, he’s also an accomplished singer, dancer, and stage actor. But what many people may not know about him is that he’s also a skilled blacksmith.

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Hugh and talk about his love for blacksmithing. He shared how he got started in this craft and how it has become a passion for him.

Q: How did you get into blacksmithing?

A: I’ve always loved working with my hands, but it wasn’t until I was preparing for my role as Jean Valjean in Les Misérables that I discovered blacksmithing. In one scene, my character is shown working at a forge, and I wanted to make sure that I looked authentic doing it. So, I took some lessons from a local blacksmith and fell in love with the craft.

Q: What do you enjoy about blacksmithing?

A: There’s something very satisfying about taking raw materials like metal and transforming them into something beautiful or useful. It requires patience, skill, and creativity. Plus, there’s just something primal about working with fire and steel that speaks to me on a deep level.

Q: Do you have any favorite projects or pieces that you’ve created?

A: One of my favorite pieces is actually a set of fireplace tools that I made for my home. They’re both functional and beautiful – exactly what good design should be.

Q: Do you see any parallels between acting/performing and blacksmithing?

A: Absolutely! Both require discipline, focus, attention to detail, and a willingness to take risks. And both can be incredibly rewarding when done well.

Q: What advice would you give to someone who wants to get started in blacksmithing?

A: Find a local blacksmith and take some lessons. Invest in good tools and learn as much as you can about the craft. And most importantly, have fun with it!

It was clear from our conversation that Hugh is passionate about blacksmithing and takes great pride in his work. He’s even started incorporating some of his pieces into his performances – like the custom knives he made for The Greatest Showman.
