Bladesmith Kyle Royer Creates Custom Knives for Gordon Ramsay

As a world-renowned chef, Gordon Ramsay understands the importance of having high-quality knives in his kitchen. After all, how can he prepare delicious meals without the right tools? That’s where custom knife makers come in. In this article, we’ll explore how one modern blacksmith created custom knives for Gordon Ramsay.
Meet Kyle Royer, a bladesmith based in Pennsylvania who has been making knives since 2009. He specializes in creating custom kitchen knives that are both beautiful and functional. When Kyle received an email from someone claiming to be from Gordon Ramsay’s team asking if he could create some custom knives for the chef, he was understandably skeptical at first.
“After doing a little bit of research and figuring out that it was actually legitimate, I was obviously very excited,” Kyle said in an interview with Modern Blacksmithing magazine.
The first step in creating these custom knives was to figure out exactly what Gordon Ramsay needed. Kyle worked closely with the chef’s team to determine the types of dishes he would be preparing with these knives and what features were most important to him.
“Gordon is known for being quite particular about his tools,” Kyle explained. “So we wanted to make sure that these knives met his exact specifications.”
One of the key features that Gordon requested was a handle made from African blackwood, which is known for its durability and resistance to moisture. The wood also has a unique grain pattern that adds visual interest to the knife handles.
In addition to the handle material, Gordon also specified that he wanted each knife blade to have a full tang construction. This means that the blade extends all the way through the handle and is secured with rivets or pins for added stability.
Kyle spent several months crafting each individual knife by hand using traditional blacksmithing techniques combined with modern machinery like water jet cutters and CNC machines. Each blade was made using high-carbon stainless steel chosen specifically for its ability to hold a sharp edge.
Once the knives were completed, Kyle shipped them to Gordon Ramsay’s restaurant in London. The chef was reportedly thrilled with the finished product and even featured the knives on his Instagram page.
Creating custom knives for someone as well-known as Gordon Ramsay is no easy feat. But for Kyle Royer, it was an opportunity to showcase his skills as a bladesmith and create something truly special for one of the world’s most respected chefs.
“Working on this project was definitely a highlight of my career so far,” Kyle said. “It’s not every day that you get to make custom knives for someone like Gordon Ramsay.”
But Kyle isn’t resting on his laurels just yet. He continues to create custom knives for chefs and home cooks alike through his business, Royer Knives.
“I’m always looking for new challenges and ways to push myself creatively,” he added. “Whether it’s creating unique designs or experimenting with new materials, there’s always something new to explore in the world of knife making.”
Custom knife making is an art form that requires both technical skill and creativity. And when you’re creating custom knives for someone like Gordon Ramsay, there’s added pressure to deliver results that meet their exacting standards. But thanks to modern blacksmiths like Kyle Royer, we can enjoy beautifully crafted tools that help us prepare delicious meals with ease.
