Heat Treating Methods: An Overview

It’s then left to cool down in still air rather than being cooled rapidly like during quenching or tempered like in tempering methods mentioned earlier). This causes larger grain size formation which increases ductility while decreasing both strength and hardness.

Case Hardening
Case hardening refers to processes where only outer layer(s) gets hardened leaving inner core soft; thus ensuring good combination between durability & flexibility for such parts under high temperatures or mechanical stresses over time. This is achieved by heating metal at a lower temperature than the previous methods (around 400°C) for longer periods of time, then quenching in water or oil.

Induction Hardening
The induction hardening method uses electromagnetic energy to heat specific parts of metal while keeping other areas cool. This allows for greater control over the process and can result in more precise and consistent results. Induction hardening is often used on gears, camshafts, and other components that require high wear resistance.

Flame Hardening
In flame hardening, a torch flame is used to heat up specific sections of metal while keeping others cool. This method is similar to induction hardening but uses different equipment and techniques. Flame hardening can be useful for small parts or ones that require localized treatment.
