Metal casting is a fundamental skill that every blacksmith should understand. It’s the process of pouring molten metal into a mold to create intricate shapes and parts for various projects. Sand casting
The sand casting technique is one of the oldest methods used in metal casting. It involves creating a mold using compacted sand mixed with clay and water. This method is perfect for producing large objects such as engine blocks or pipes.
To make a mold, first, create an impression by pressing an object into damp sand then remove it carefully leaving behind its shape.
Next, fill the cavity with molten metal through a gate system which consists of several channels that direct liquid metals from the pouring basin to each part of the mold.

Investment Casting
This method is ideal for creating small objects in high detail such as jewelry or dental implants. Investment casting involves creating molds using wax patterns coated in ceramic shell material.
To begin making your investment castings start by making your wax model by carving it out of hard wax or 3D printing it.
Then create a ceramic shell around your wax pattern before finally melting out your wax from inside the shell leaving behind an empty ceramic mould ready for molten metal to fill it up.

Die Casting
Die-casting is another popular technique used mainly in manufacturing where high precision is required. The process involves injecting melted metals under high pressure into reusable steel molds (dies).
The dies are designed specifically based on what product you want to produce resulting in uniform parts with tight tolerances.

Centrifugal Casting
This type of casting uses centrifugal force to pour liquid metals into cylindrical molds rotating at high speed around their axis allowing gravity to distribute them evenly throughout resulting in even thickness and minimal defects.
Centrifugal casting is used to create long cylindrical shapes such as pipes, tubes or other hollow objects.

Lost Foam Casting
This method involves carving the desired shape of an object out of foam then coating it with a mixture of sand and binder. When the coated foam is heated up, the foam vaporizes leaving behind a cavity that molten metal can be poured into.
Lost-foam casting offers benefits over traditional sand-casting methods since less material is needed for each mold reducing wasted materials.

Continuous Casting
This technique is used mainly in steel manufacturing where molten metals are cast continuously through molds to make flat sheets or long bars. The process allows for high production rates of consistent quality products.

Green Sand Casting
Green sand casting uses natural green sand mixed with water and clay to form molds. This type of mold-making requires fewer resources than investment casting making it cost-effective and ideal for beginners.
To begin, mix your green-sand mixture thoroughly before shaping it around an object you want to replicate. Finally pour in your liquid metal once the mold has been created.

Vacuum Casting
With vacuum casting machines, blacksmiths can produce small batches while maintaining high-quality results. The process involves creating a silicone rubber mold around an existing model then placing it under vacuum pressure so that molten metal flows in perfectly replicating every detail on your original piece.
