“Unconventional Blacksmithing Technique: Hot Punching Holes with a Chisel”

As a blacksmith, you’re likely familiar with the various techniques for punching holes in metal. But have you ever considered using a chisel to hot punch your holes? It may sound unconventional, but there are actually a few benefits to this technique.

First of all, using a chisel allows for more precise placement of the hole. With other methods like drift punches or center punches, it can be difficult to ensure that the hole is exactly where you want it. A chisel gives you greater control over the location of the hole and its size.

Another advantage of hot punching with a chisel is that it can be faster than other methods. Once you get the hang of it, you can punch multiple holes in quick succession without having to reheat your metal as often.

So how do you go about hot punching with a chisel? Here are some steps to follow:

1. Heat up your metal

This step should be familiar if you’ve done any forging before. Put your piece of metal into your forge and heat it up until it’s at least orange-hot.

2. Mark where you want to punch

Using a sharpie or other marking tool, mark where on the metal you want to punch your hole. This will help guide your chisel as well as ensure that all of your holes are consistent.

3. Choose an appropriate sized chisel

You’ll want to choose a chisel that’s slightly smaller than the diameter of the hole you want to create. For example, if you’re aiming for ¼” holes, use an ⅛” or 3/16″ wide cold chisel.

4. Place your cold chisel on top of the marked spot

Make sure that your cold chisel is centered directly above where you marked on top (or bottom) surface).

5. Strike firmly but not too hard

With one hand holding onto either side handle grips tightly enough so they don’t slip, and the other hand holding your hammer, strike the top of the chisel firmly but not too hard. It’s important to avoid hitting it too hard, as that can cause damage to both the metal and your tools.

6. Rotate your chisel

As you make progress on the hole, rotate your cold chisel slightly so that it cuts a circular path through the metal. This will ensure that you get a clean, round hole.

7. Cool down and clean up

Once you’ve punched all of your holes with this technique, let them cool down completely before moving onto any additional steps or finishing touches. Once they’re cooled off enough for you to touch them safely again (usually 20 minutes or more), remove any slag from around each hole with a wire brush.

While hot punching with a chisel can be an effective technique for creating precise and consistent holes in metal quickly and easily, there are some potential drawbacks to consider as well.

For one thing, using a chisel can require more physical effort than other methods like drift punches or center punches because you need to hold onto both ends of the tool while striking it with a hammer. If you have arthritis or another condition that affects your grip strength or dexterity in any way whatsoever then this method may not be suitable for you at all.

Another potential issue is that using a cold chisel on hot metal can sometimes cause sparks which could pose safety hazards if proper precautions aren’t taken (such as wearing protective clothing, eyewear etc). Be sure to take adequate safety precautions when working with these techniques!

Finally, this approach might not work well for thicker pieces of metal where large diameter holes are needed because smaller cold chisels tend to break under these conditions due their small size being unable accommodate larger forces created during use against thicker material thicknesses commonly found in heavy duty applications like industrial machinery manufacturing plants etc..
