Combination Edges

Tanto

Tanto blades have origins in Japanese swords crafted around 800 AD; this style was later adapted by American knifemakers into modern-day designs. They feature two distinct edges: one long, straight section leading up towards an unsharpened angled transition (known as “the shoulder”), followed by another shorter beveled edge leading from there towards its pointed tip – making them ideal self-defense tools.

Blade Grind Types

Grinding is an essential step in creating a sharp and effective blade because it determines how well your knife will cut through different materials while also influencing its overall weight distribution and balance point.

There are three primary types of grinds used when forging or grinding blades:

1) Flat Grind

A flat grind is a straight taper that runs from the blade’s spine down to the cutting edge. It offers an excellent balance of sharpness and durability, making it ideal for general-purpose knives.

2) Hollow Grind

Hollow grinds are concave-shaped blades ground out along their edges, which makes them sharper than flat grinds. However, they’re also more fragile as there’s less metal behind the edge itself – requiring extra care when sharpening and maintaining these types of knives.

3) Convex Grind

Convex grinds have curves that rise up from both sides of a knife’s bevels, creating a convex shape at its tip. This design improves overall strength and durability while providing excellent slicing capabilities through different materials such as meats or vegetables.

Blade Bevel Types

The angle where the blade meets its edge is known as the bevel; this angle determines how well your knife will cut through different materials with ease.

Flat Bevel

A flat bevel has no curve on either side – resulting in a straight line running directly between your knife’s spine and its cutting edge. They’re commonly used for heavy-duty tasks like chopping or cleaving since they provide significant amounts of force needed to get through tougher cuts like bone or frozen meat without damaging your blade’s integrity.

Tapered Bevel

A tapered bevel starts thick near its base then gradually thins out towards its cutting edge. This type of design provides great versatility between slicing fruits/vegetables versus heavier meats since it combines both robustness with precision handling abilities when needed most – depending upon what you’re working on during any given moment!

Chisel Edge

A chisel-edge involves grinding only one side of your blade as opposed to two (which would create double-beveled designs). They’re commonly found on Japanese-style chef knives due to their precise nature – but can also work well for other purposes if you need an extremely sharp edge for detail work.
