Heat treatment is an essential process in modern blacksmithing. It involves heating and cooling metal to alter its physical and mechanical properties, including hardness, strength, ductility, and toughness. The process can be applied to various metals such as steel, iron, copper, aluminum, and brass.
There are several heat treatment processes available for blacksmiths to choose from depending on the desired outcome. These include annealing, normalizing, hardening and tempering. Annealing involves heating metal to a specific temperature before allowing it to cool slowly. This process helps relieve internal stresses in the metal while making it more malleable. Normalizing is similar but involves cooling the metal in still air after heating it.
Hardening involves heating the material until austenite forms then rapidly cooling it using oil or water quenching techniques that freeze the crystal structure of the metal at high temperatures creating a harder structure known as martensite.
Tempering follows hardening as it reduces brittleness created by rapid cooling during hardening by reducing stress concentration sites within martensitic structures producing a more ductile yet strong material.
