Upsetting is a technique used in blacksmithing to increase the thickness of metal at a particular point without affecting its length. The process involves heating the metal and hammering it using an upsetting tool or a fuller, which has a rounded edge that creates an indentation on the surface of the metal. Upsetting can be used for various purposes, such as creating tenons, rivets, and bolts.

The first step before upsetting is choosing the right type of tool to use. An upsetting block should be made from high-quality steel with a hardened surface that can withstand repeated hammering over time. A good hammer will also make your work easier and more efficient since you’ll need to apply lots of force while hitting the metal.

Once you have your tools ready, it’s time to prepare the metal for upsetting. You’ll need to heat it until it reaches a malleable state where it’s easy to shape but not too hot that it loses its shape after cooling down. This stage requires some experience because overheating might cause cracking or burning of the material.

After heating, hold your tongs firmly around one end of the metal piece and place it onto your upset block so that its centerline aligns with that of your upset block. Start by hitting gently on one side using your hammer while rotating regularly around 90 degrees each strike until you get a small dent in line with where you want extra mass added (e.g., if making rivets). Repeat this process several times until you achieve sufficient thickness.

If creating tenons or bolts, start by drawing out one end into an elongated taper using traditional forging techniques like flattening or rolling under pressure gradually from both sides then cut off excess material using chisels or saw blades before heading onto upset blocks.

It’s essential to take breaks frequently during this process since repeatedly holding heavy pieces may lead to fatigue injuries over time.

After completing all necessary steps, quenching the metal in water or oil will help it retain its shape and hardness. However, be careful not to over-quench as it may cause cracking or warping of the material.

In conclusion, upsetting is a useful technique that every blacksmith should know since it’s applicable in many scenarios like creating tenons, bolts, and rivets. To master this skill requires patience and practice since overheating or under-heating can ruin your workpiece. Using quality tools like an upset block and hammer will make your job more comfortable and efficient while taking breaks frequently helps prevent injuries caused by fatigue over time.
