Forge Your Own Tongs: A Blacksmith’s Guide to Making Essential Tools

Once you have chosen the material, you need to cut it into a suitable length that matches the size of your desired tongs. For instance, if you want to make a pair of 16-inch long flat-nose tongs, then cut two pieces of mild steel bars that measure 16 inches in length each.
Step 3: Shaping The Tongs
After cutting the stock into desired lengths using a hacksaw or angle grinder with a cutoff disc attachment (wear protective gear), mark out where to bend them using soapstone crayon or marker pen on both ends of each bar at about one-third from either end.
Next, heat up one end of one bar until red hot using propane torch or gas forge before placing it over an anvil horn and hammering down with hammer blows from all sides until it forms a V shape.
Repeat this process for every tong half until both halves have been shaped into V shapes at their respective marked positions and cooled down naturally without quenching.
Step 4: Making The Jaws And Reinforcements
Using same techniques mentioned above but shaping jaws wider than handles so they overlap handle section by couple millimeters; hammer jaws flat and smooth on outside edges for better grip, then drill a hole through each tong half at the center of their respective V shapes.
Insert a metal rod or pin that is slightly smaller than the drilled hole’s diameter into one tong half’s V shape until it protrudes out from behind handle by about 2 inches before repeating same process for other tong half but this time inserting the pin halfway into the hole so both halves can be assembled together.
Step 5: Assembly
To assemble your tongs, first heat up both ends of one half until they are red hot using propane torch or gas forge. Then place it over an anvil horn with its jaws facing upwards and gently tap with a hammer to form them into proper alignment with each other before sliding the second tong half onto their pins in opposite directions.
Finally, use pliers to bend over any remaining protruding lengths of pins behind handles so they do not snag on anything while handling hot metals.
