8 Types of Heat Treatment to Make Your Steel Stronger, More Durable and Resistant to Wear and Tear

Heat treatment is an essential process in modern blacksmithing. It involves the use of heat to alter the physical and chemical properties of steel, making it stronger, more durable, and resistant to wear and tear. Here are eight different types of heat treatments that can be used on steel.

1. Annealing: This involves heating steel until it becomes soft and then slowly cooling it down to room temperature. The process helps reduce internal stresses in the metal and makes it easier to work with.

2. Normalizing: In this process, steel is heated above its critical temperature before being allowed to cool in still air. It results in a uniform microstructure throughout the material.

3. Hardening: Steel is heated above its critical temperature before being rapidly cooled by quenching it in water or oil. The rapid cooling causes the formation of martensite, which gives the metal its hardness.

4. Tempering: After hardening, steel can become too brittle for some applications, so tempering is done by reheating it below its critical point before allowing gradual cooling again so that only part of the martensite will transform into tempered martensite.

5. Case hardening: In this process, carbon-rich material such as charcoal or bone is packed around low-carbon steel before heating at high temperatures for several hours until carbon diffuses into the surface layer creating a hardened exterior while maintaining a softer core.

6. Austempering: A newer method where after heating up higher than normalizing but lower than hardening temperatures; quenched into salt bath instead of oil or water which allows for much less stress build-up during cooling resulting in better toughness without sacrificing strength

7.Tufftriding – A type of nitriding that uses ammonia gas instead of liquid nitrides  to increase surface hardness and durability

8.Cryogenic Treatment- Lowers temperatures drastically between -120°C(-184°F)and -196°C(-321°F) to relieve stress and improve wear resistance
