After shaping is complete, it’s time for heat treatment. Heat treatment involves heating your tool steel to a specific temperature and then quenching (rapidly cooling) it in water or oil. This process helps create the desired level of hardness needed for your finished product.

When making cutting tools like knives or chisels, be sure to cool them slowly after hardening by tempering them in an oven set at around 350°F. This process will reduce brittleness while also maintaining toughness.
