Quenchants themselves can be quite varied as well! Water is still one of the most commonly used mediums because it cools metal down rapidly (due to its heat capacity), but other liquids like oil or brine can provide different results due to their differing thermal conductivities. For instance, if you’re looking for greater toughness from your steel than hardness, then using oil instead of water could give you better results!

Nowadays though – rather than relying solely on traditional methods – many blacksmiths incorporate more advanced techniques such as cryogenic quenching or vacuum quenching systems into their workflow. Cryogenic treatments involve slowly cooling down materials over several hours or even days, while vacuum quenching utilizes a near-zero-pressure environment to reduce the risk of distortion and cracking in metals.

However, despite all these advancements, there are still some quirks with quenching that blacksmiths have come to accept. For example: have you ever noticed how much steam is produced when water hits hot metal? Steam can be so thick that it almost looks like smoke! It’s a bizarre sight to behold but is an indication that our materials are cooling down rapidly.

But perhaps one of the most absurd aspects of quenching lies in its unpredictability. Even with years of experience under their belt, blacksmiths can never be 100% sure what properties they’ll end up with once their metals have been quenched. Sure, we can make educated guesses based on factors such as temperature, time spent in the medium, etc., but sometimes things just don’t turn out as expected!

Some believe that certain types of water (such as rainwater) produce better results than others while others swear by using different liquids entirely like corn oil or molasses! But really – it’s all about finding what works best for your specific needs and preferences.
