The rapid cooling rate causes the atoms in the metal to freeze quickly, creating a rigid crystalline structure that increases its hardness.

Tempering is a heat treatment method that follows quenching to reduce brittleness while maintaining high hardness levels. After quenching, the metal is heated again at lower temperatures than before but still above room temperature but below critical levels; this reduces internal stress without reducing hardness significantly.

Case hardening is another useful technique where only certain parts of an object are hardened by selectively adding carbon through diffusion into surface layers. This improves wear resistance without making it brittle, which can be achieved using various techniques like Carbonitriding (adding nitrogen and carbon), Nitriding (adding nitrogen), Carburizing (adding carbon), Flame Hardening (directly exposing surface areas with flame).

Blacksmiths may also use other methods like martempering/ austempering, normalizing depending on their needs and desired outcomes from their workpieces.

One crucial factor in successful heat treating is precise control over temperature during each step of the process. Blacksmiths have different ways of achieving this accuracy depending on their equipment requirements – electric furnaces being one example- but all involve careful monitoring and adjustment of temperature to ensure consistency.

There are also safety concerns to consider while heat treating as the process involves high temperatures, which can be dangerous if not handled correctly. Blacksmiths must have proper protective gear like gloves, goggles, and aprons that protect against burns or other injuries.
