Cryogenic treatment entails immersing heated steel into liquid nitrogen (-320°F) for an extended period of time. This method produces an ultra-hard surface that is more durable and wear-resistant than other techniques.

The blacksmith must select the appropriate tempering method for each project based on the desired outcome, which may involve trial and error. It’s essential to consider the type of metal being used as well as its intended application when selecting a tempering technique.

When it comes to tempering temperatures, they vary depending on the steel type being used. For instance, low-carbon steels require lower temperatures than high-carbon steels due to their different properties. Lower carbon content means less hardening potential so lower temperature ranges are necessary while higher carbon content requires greater heat input during quench cooling.
