8 Tips for Blacksmiths to Keep Their Tools in Top Shape

Tool restoration and repair is an essential skill for any blacksmith. Maintaining your tools can save you money and time in the long run, as well as ensure that they are always functioning at their best. Here are eight tips to help you with tool restoration and repair.

1. Keep your tools clean: Dirt, rust, and other debris can cause damage over time. Regular cleaning will keep your tools in good shape.

2. Remove rust: Use sandpaper or a wire brush to remove rust from metal surfaces. If there’s too much rust, you may need to use a chemical solvent like vinegar or naval jelly.

3. Re-sharpen edges: A sharp edge is essential for proper function of many tools such as chisels, punches etc . Invest in a good sharpening stone or grinding wheel.

4. Replace broken handles: Wooden handles can crack or break over time; replace them when necessary with new ones made from quality materials.

5. Lubricate moving parts: Moving parts on hammers, tongs etc should be lubricated regularly with oil or grease to prevent wear and tear.

6. Store properly: Store your tools in a dry place that’s protected from moisture and dust when not in use .

7.Inspect before use : Before using the tool , make sure it is free of damage which could lead to accidents while using it .

8.Know when it’s time to replace : Tools often have a lifespan after which they become unsafe even after repairs . Know when its time to retire the old tool & invest in new one rather than trying endless repairs

By following these tips, you’ll keep your blacksmithing tools functional for years to come!
