The diameter of the resulting indentation provides data on its size that can be compared with charts to estimate its Brinell hardness number. VHT uses an indenter shaped like a pyramid to apply pressure onto the sample’s surface at controlled loads while measuring how deep into it penetrates by means of optical microscopy or other imaging techniques.

Knoop Hardness Testing (KHT) works similarly to Vickers but uses elongated pyramidal indenters instead and measures only depth along one axis since this axis length remains constant across all tests regardless if there are differences between samples being examined – perfect when dealing with small parts.

In addition to these traditional methods, there are also some newer techniques such as nanoindentation and ultrasonic contact impedance (UCI) that allow us to measure even smaller changes in material properties accurately.

Hardness testing is essential in modern blacksmithing as it helps determine the strength of materials.
