The History and Importance of Tool Steel in Blacksmithing

As a journalist, I never thought that I’d be writing about blacksmithing and tool steel. But here we are! And you know what? It’s actually pretty interesting.
Let’s start with the basics: what is tool steel? Essentially, it’s a type of high-carbon steel that is designed to withstand the rigors of heavy use in tools and machinery. Tool steels generally have excellent hardness, wear resistance, and toughness – all qualities that make them ideal for blacksmithing.
Historically speaking, blacksmiths have been using tool steel for centuries. In fact, the earliest known examples of tool steel date back to ancient times – the Egyptians used iron tools with high carbon content as far back as 1350 BC.
But it wasn’t until the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century that tool steel really started to come into its own. With developments in metallurgy and manufacturing techniques, it became possible to produce large quantities of high-quality tool steel at reasonable prices.
One of the most famous uses of tool steel in blacksmithing is in making hammers. Hammers are one of the most basic and essential tools for any blacksmith, and they need to be made from materials that can withstand constant pounding without breaking or losing their shape.
In order to achieve this kind of durability, hammerheads are typically made from a specific type of tool steel called S7. This particular alloy contains chromium, molybdenum, and vanadium – all elements that contribute to its exceptional toughness and shock resistance.
But hammers aren’t the only tools that benefit from using high-quality tool steels. Chisels, punches, tongs – virtually every type of hand-held forging implement can be improved by using better materials.
For example, many modern-day blacksmiths swear by D2 tool steel when making chisels or other cutting tools. This particular alloy has an incredibly high wear resistance, which means it can maintain its sharp edge even after repeated use.
Interestingly, tool steel isn’t just used for hand-held tools. It’s also commonly used in machine parts and dies – the pieces of metal that are used to shape raw materials into finished products.
In these applications, tool steel needs to be able to withstand extreme temperatures and pressure without cracking or deforming. This is where alloys like H13 come into play – they’re designed specifically for high-temperature applications and can be found in everything from injection molding machines to extrusion presses.
Of course, all of this talk about tool steels and blacksmithing wouldn’t be complete without mentioning one of the most famous blacksmiths of all time: John Henry.
According to legend, John Henry was a railroad worker who famously challenged a steam-powered hammer to a race – with his trusty hand-held hammer as his only tool. Although he ultimately won the contest (at great cost to his own health), the story has become a symbol of the strength and resilience of manual laborers in the face of technological progress.

Whether you’re making hammers by hand or using CNC machines to produce complex parts, one thing remains clear: high-quality materials are essential for creating tools that will stand up over time.
