Blacksmithing might seem like a dying art form, but it still exists today thanks to people like Chris Hemsworth. He started learning blacksmithing when he was preparing for his role as Thor in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe films. To play the God of Thunder convincingly, Hemsworth had to bulk up and learn how to wield a hammer like a pro. And what better way to do that than by learning from real-life blacksmiths?
Hemsworth took lessons from Master Blacksmith Tony Swatton while filming Thor: Ragnarok in Australia. Swatton taught him how to forge weapons and armor just like they did thousands of years ago. Hemsworth was so fascinated by this skill that he continued practicing even after filming ended.
In an interview with GQ Australia, Hemsworth said “I love being able to create something tangible with my hands.” His passion for blacksmithing led him to set up his own workshop at home where he could continue honing his skills.
So what does Chris Hemsworth’s workshop look like? It’s no ordinary garage or shed; it’s a fully-equipped blacksmith shop complete with anvils, hammers, tongs, and forges. In fact, it looks more like something out of Game of Thrones than suburban Australia.

In an interview with Men’s Health magazine, Hemsworth said that blacksmithing helps him stay grounded. “It’s nice to have something outside of acting that you’re passionate about,” he says. “When I’m working on a project in the shop, it’s just me and the metal. There are no cameras or people around, so it gives me time to focus on something completely different.”
Hemsworth also likes to involve his family in his blacksmithing endeavors. His wife Elsa Pataky sometimes joins him in the workshop while their children watch from afar as they see what dad is making next!
One of the most impressive things about Hemsworth’s blacksmithing skills is how much he has learned in such a short period of time. It takes years of practice to become a master blacksmith like Tony Swatton or Brian Brazeal but Hemsworth has shown real talent in this field.
The actor recently posted a video on Instagram showing off some of his latest work: two swords he made himself for one of his film projects – Extraction (2020). The swords were crafted using traditional techniques and materials, including carbon steel blades which were heated up red-hot before being hammered into shape by hand.
Beyond just making weapons for films though, Chris Hemsworth has used his newfound skill set for other creative pursuits too! In 2019 he worked with Australian furniture company Wood Melbourne creating bespoke pieces made out of iron!
