Idris Elba is a man of many talents. He’s an actor, producer, writer, musician, and DJ. But what many people don’t know is that he’s also a modern blacksmith.
Elba’s love for blacksmithing started when he was just a child. His grandfather introduced him to the craft and taught him how to make horseshoes. As he grew older, his passion for blacksmithing never faded away.
In 2018, Elba starred in a four-part series called “Idris Elba: King of Speed” where he explored his passion for cars and racing. However, in one episode titled “King of Crafts,” viewers got to see another side of Elba as he delved into his love for blacksmithing.
During the episode, Elba visited the UK’s only remaining bell foundry Whitechapel Bell Foundry. There he met with master craftsman Nigel Taylor who taught him some traditional techniques on forging iron using coal fire furnaces and hammers.

After filming wrapped up on “King of Speed,” instead of walking away from the Bell Foundry as just another celebrity guest star appearance; Idris decided to take it further by investing money along with others in acquiring ownership stake in the Whitechapel Bell Foundry so that they could preserve its history while continuing its legacy through innovative new technologies which can be integrated alongside old school techniques used since centuries past.
Elba has even incorporated his love for blacksmithing into his production company Green Door Pictures’ logo which features an iron anvil with the letter “GDP” stamped into it.
