Tempering

Tempering is a heat treatment method used after quenching which reduces brittleness caused by rapid cooling from high temperatures during quenching. It involves reheating the metal to a lower temperature and then allowing it to cool slowly. This process reduces internal stresses and increases toughness, making the material more resistant to impacts.

Tempering is usually done at temperatures between 400°F-1100°F depending on desired results. Higher temperatures result in softer metals while lower tempratures produce harder materials with greater brittleness. The exact temperature and duration of tempering will depend on the type of steel being used, its thickness, and previous processing steps such as quenching.

Hardening

Hardening is a heat treatment method that involves heating metal above its critical temperature followed by rapid cooling (quenching) to achieve maximum hardness. It is often used in combination with other heat treatment methods like annealing or tempering.

During hardening process martensitic transformation takes place which changes crystal structure from austenite to martensite phase contributing towards increased hardness of the material. Hardened metals are very brittle but can be made tougher by tempering afterwards.
