1. Drawing Out

Drawing out is the process of elongating a piece of metal by hammering it in one direction. This technique is often used to make tapers or to reduce the thickness of a section without changing its length.

To draw out metal, start by heating it until it’s pliable but not too soft. Then use a flat-faced hammer to strike the metal repeatedly in one direction while rotating it slightly between each blow. This will cause the metal to stretch out in that direction.

2. Upsetting

Upsetting is essentially the opposite of drawing out – instead of elongating a piece, you’re making it shorter and thicker.

To upset metal, heat it until it’s pliable and then hit it with a hammer on its end while holding onto the other end with tongs or pliers. The force from your blows should cause the metal to thicken up where you struck it.

3. Punching

Punching involves creating holes or indentations in a piece of metal using specialized punches.

To punch holes into metal, first mark where you want them with a center punch or prick punch so that your drill bit doesn’t wander when boring through steel later on during this step; then use an appropriate size hole punch which depends on what size hole needs punching through thick gauge sheet material versus thin gauges as well as whether larger diameter tubing requires punched before being bent over itself for welding purposes like roll cages found in cars/trucks/etc..

4. Bending

To forge bevels in steel blades, start by heating up the blade until it’s red-hot then use a hammer along with anvil edge or swage block if available (a specialized metalworking tool) placed underneath where you want your taper point positioned before striking multiple light blows following contours needed until achieving desired angle(s).

7. Fullering

Fullering is another forging technique used primarily in making blades/axes/knives but also useful for creating decorative designs like scrolling patterns during shaping processes where material removal isn’t necessary yet still requires additional work beyond simple bending/breaking etc..

To fuller metal surfaces with this method – heat up the area being worked upon through repeated passes over flames/heat sources; then use a fuller tool either handheld manual kind or mounted onto an anvil as well as flat-faced hammer head whilst tapping lightly repeatedly along surface lengthwise back forth motion helps create optimal results faster than other methods.

8. Swaging

9. Rolling
