15 Tips for Heat Treating Drifts: The Secret to Durable and Strong Blacksmithing Tools

Heat treating is a critical process in the blacksmithing world. It is used to increase the strength and durability of drifts, which are essential tools for shaping metal. Heat treating can reduce the risk of deformation or breakage while using a drift. Here are 15 tips for heat treating your drifts.

1. Choose high-quality steel: The first step to making a durable drift is selecting high-quality steel that can withstand heat treatment without cracking or breaking.

2. Clean the metal: Before heating any metal, it’s important to clean it thoroughly to remove any impurities such as rust, oil, or dirt.

3. Normalize the metal: Normalizing involves heating and cooling your steel three times before you quench it in water or oil. This helps even out any inconsistencies in grain size caused by forging.

4. Heat your forge: To heat treat your drifts correctly, you need an adequately heated forge with enough space so that you can place larger pieces of metal into it.

5. Create a uniform temperature: Once you have acquired sufficient heat from your forge, place your drift inside and ensure there’s enough room around it for even heating.

6. Use thermocouples: Thermocouples are used to measure the temperature of the forge accurately; this will help ensure that every part of your piece reaches its optimal temperature during heat treatment.

7. Time matters: Depending on what type of steel was chosen for making your drifts, different times may be required; however generally speaking 1 hour per inch thickness should be sufficient at 1550°F (840°C).
